Is Penang Island Overrated?

While Penang Island used to be 'the' place to live in in the 80s and before, today it is no longer the same. These days you get traffic jams due to congestions of cars and motorbikes along main routes during peak hours, come holidays and festivities it gets worsts. Unless you inherit ancestral homes, the price of decent landed property and apartment these days are sky high for new buyers, pigeon holes not counting.

IMHO, it is much more comfortable to live in the mainland and enjoy the wide open spaces at a more affordable price, after all the island is just a bridge's drive away.

Any opinions?

Thanks for the feedback everyone.

It's becoming like another Singapore, and that is not a compliment. They should take it easy on the development of condos especially.

Supply will diminish with a lack of demand. But if you have the money, why not?

singaporeans are buying up all the properties and selling them. it's overrated, but the market is not controlled by the locals. it's all a monopoly game.

i'm not from penang and don't know much of the locals there but i agree with the op and lk that penang is overated. i hear the properties there goes to millions...with all the traffic jam, terrible public transport, reclaimed land..how can the houses there go to the millions? are the houses made from gold? who is buying them anyway?
